Some short quotes from the cover:

Siblings by Choice: Race, Gender, and Violence by Archie Smith Jr. and Ursula Riedel-Pfaefflin elevates the concept of contextualization to another level. The book reveals that the messages and conversations that we internalize and that impact the way we behave are rooted in sociohistorical realities ………. . Pastoral care and counseling must always view the problems of individuals, families, and small groups of people with their broadest historical and social contexts."

Edward P Wimberly, Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta

"Siblings by Choice is a fresh and progressive treatment of pastoral care and intercultural realities. This book will set the standard on defining narrative agency and applying systemic perspectives to small and large matters of care. ……….This volume courageously investigates how culturally diverse humans may actually fashion sibling relationships across incalculable divides."

Larry Graham, Miff School of Theology

"The arrival of Siblings by Choice fills a tremendous void in the literature of pastoral care and practical theology…………… Archie Smith and Ursula Riedel-Pfaefflin are global and inclusive in their thinking, sharing experience, expertise, and perspectives on narrative theory, systemic thinking, and intercultural realities to help us see and move to action. ……….."

Carroll Watkins Ali, Executive Director of The Denver Center for Family Intervention, LLC in Denver, Colorado

"Siblings by Choice: Race, Gender. ……… As the authors paint for us the portraits of their own social locations, we realize that they themselves represent the differences about which they speak: one an African American male who has known the systemic oppression of life in a white privileged society; the other, a German female who has known privilege because of race, but oppression because she is a woman. Being of different genders, races, and nationalities, they write together in the midst of a world broken and scarred by fear and violence."

Mary Donovan Turner, Pacific School of Religion
